Some interiors evoke emotions at first glance – we feel relaxed, natural, and simply… good. What makes one flat feel empty and bland, while another instantly has “that something”? The secret lies in consciously designing atmosphere – not just function or aesthetics.
Today, we’ll share how to create interiors with character and mood – spaces that draw attention without being loud. This kind of design doesn’t shout – it speaks softly, but clearly.
Wall colour is the foundation of atmosphere. It sets the tone for the entire arrangement and influences how we feel in the space. In the featured project, we used a warm terracotta shade that adds cosiness and elegance to the interior.
🟠 Why does it work?
🎨 Designer tip:
Don’t be afraid of stronger colours – the key lies in proportion. One wall or niche is enough to give character without excess.
Character in an interior often comes from a mix of materials and how they are intentionally combined. It’s not just about what is used, but how it all works together.
🔍 In this space, we have:
🔸 Tip:
Try combining different textures – soft with hard, matt with glossy. It’s texture that makes a space feel alive, even when the colour palette is calm.
In a well-designed interior, light does more than illuminate – it shapes the space. In this example, we used pendant lamps with soft forms. Their light reflects off the walls, creating shadows and a warm glow.
💡 The three key layers of lighting:
🔸 Tip:
Use bulbs with a light temperature of 2700–3000K – this resembles sunset light and creates a cosy feel.
Houseplants are more than decor – they are an active element of the design, influencing mood and the feel of the entire space. In the featured project, we used plants of various shapes and sizes (palm, alocasia, philodendron).
🪴 Why it’s worth it:
🔸 Tip:
Place plants at different heights – on the floor, on tables, in hanging macramé. Instead of many small pots, go for a few large, bold specimens.
An orange armchair, black lamps with wooden details, dark circular wall art – all examples of well-chosen bold elements. Each has a purpose and fits the overall concept.
🛋️ The 80/20 rule:
🔸 Tip:
When selecting a bold colour, shape or pattern – use it in no more than 2–3 places. Let the rest be a backdrop, not a competitor.
Most importantly: don’t copy ready-made interiors 1:1. Take inspiration, but adapt it to your life. Mood and character don’t come from catalogues – they come from your needs, lifestyle, memories and taste.
🔸 Ask yourself:
A home with atmosphere doesn’t need to be expensive, flashy or picture-perfect. It just needs to be yours – thoughtful, cohesive, and heartfelt. Design that creates mood is design that says something – about you, your choices, and the world around you.
